Food swallowed --- passes along alimentary canal (tube running from mouth to anus)
The processes involved are:
1. Ingestion; taking food in
2. Digestion; the break down of food into small, soluble molecules
3. Absorption; in to the bloodstream for distribution
4. Assimilation; the use of absorbed food materials in the cell
5. Egestion; removal of undigested food as faeces
