Structure

Human, animal and plant cells contain:

  • Nucleus-controls the activities in the cell
  • Cytoplasm-where most chemical reactions take place
  • Cell Membrane-controls what comes in and goes out
  • Mitochondria-most energy is released here in respiration.
  • Ribosomes-where protein synthesis occurs

Plant cells also contain:

  • A cell wall-(made out of cellulose) to strengthen the cell
  • Chloroplasts-abosrb light to make food
  • A permanent vacuole-filled with cell sap

Other Cells

In a bacterial cell, the genes are NOT in a nucleus. Within a bacterial cell is:

  • Cytoplasm
  • Cell membrane
  • Cell wall

In a yeast cell is:

  • Nucleus
  • Cytoplasm
  • Cell membrane
  • Cell Wall

Diffusion is the spreading out of the particles of a gas or substance in a solution. It results in a net movement from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. The greater the difference in concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion.
