Basics of Biology AS

?

Osmosis

Osmosis- Water moves down a concentration gradient from an area of high water potential to an area of low water potential through a partially/selectively permeable membrane.

Haemolysis- When water moves into an animal cell and it bursts

Crenation- When water moves out of an animal cell

Plasmolyis - When water moves out of a plant cell causing the protoplast to pull away from the cell wall (plant cell)

Incipient Plasmolysis- Water absorbed by cells = water loss (plant cell)

Turgid- Cells absorb but they do not burst (plant cell)
