LAMARCK

INHERITANCE OF ACQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS.
Believed species formed from change to existing species.
How it happened:
1. Giraffe had short necks
2. Would stretch its neck to reach top of trees
3. Slightly longer due to stretch
4. Longer neck passed on to offspring
5. Over generations, neck became longer.
WRONG BECAUSE CHANGES THAT TAKE PLACE IN AN ANIMALS LIFETIME CANNOT BE INHERITED.

NATURAL SELECTION.
1. A species shows a genetic variation
2. Individuals have features which are more suitable to survive and breed
3. Genes of these features passed to next generation
MUTATION can occur which changes genes and could cause a rapid change in a species.

Why was it not accepted?

EVOLUTION NOT ACCEPTED AS:
- No evidence at the time
- Genes had not been discovered so they did not understand inheritance
- Went against God creating all living things

SIDENOTE:
Evolution: Species of today evolving from simpler forms from billions of years ago
Natural Selection: The process by which evolution takes place
