Ahern an Davie: Point out that class division is sharpest in urban working class areas. They say that in these areas beliefs do exist but actual attendance is not strong. They also point out that there is a close relationship between belief and practice among the middle class.

Goode: Argues that church attendance is simply ‘something the middle class do’.

Inglis and Wickham: Argue that the church has organised itself since the 19^th century around middle class values.
