Culture

Refers to a group of people in society who share the same customs, language, dress, beliefs and values. 

Cultural groups are thought to be different to others such as the travelling communities which makes them subject to discrimmination.

Race

Refers to a group that is considered to have distinct characteristics based on their skin colour, nationality or ethnic group.

The NHS, emergency services and the LA ask people to identify themselves as White, Asian, Black, Mixed race, Chinese or another ethnic group.

Disability

Defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on a person's ability to do normal daily activities.

Social Class

Defined by economic or educational status, where people are grouped into hierarchical social catagories.

People sometimes have unfavourable views of others and make judgements because of their social class.

Age

People are sometimes discriminated against because of their age, and despite being an ageing society there are still negative perceptions about older people being frail or confused.

Sexual Orientation

Discrimmination due to someone's sexuality, if they are bisexual, gay or lesbian, is known as homophobia.

Gender

Refers to whether someone is male, female or transgender.

Religion

Religion is a system of beliefs and values. It can be very important to people and influence the way they live their life.

Religious discrimmination could involve a person's religious needs not being met, for example kosher food not being available for a Jewish patient at a hospital.
