Melody

  • Sequences and Imitation was used,
  • highly ornamented,
  • improvisatory,
  • dynamics are generally either loud or soft.

Texture

  • often Polyphopnic, could also be Homophonic.
  • multiple melodies and countermelodies,
  • basso continuo,
  • occasional homophony.

Harmony

  • use of Ostinato,
  • major and minor scales generally used as a basis,
  • cadences at the end of sections,
  • modulations and harmonic sequences (repetition of a series of chords at a higher or lower pitch).

Rhythm

  • energetic, driving rhythms, dance like, continuous,
  • short, melodic and rhythmic phrases common,
  • repeated rhythms e.g. dotted rhythms,
  • meters such as 2, 3, 4 and 6 were typical. compound time used,
  • tempos were faster and slower than earlier periods, and the tempo often slowed towards the end of a piece.

  • dances- allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue, gavotte, musette, bouree, minuet and pavane,
  • each dance movement is usually written in two sections (binary form).
