Bandura 1961

A-  if Pp exposed to agg model would reporduce aggressive acts similar to the model.if pp are more likely to copy same sex model than opposite sex 

Procedure

  • 36boys and 36 girls- 37-69 months old- stanford uni nursery school. 
  • split into 8 grps- 6pp in each- split into 3b&3g & control group of 24Pp 
  • Half aggressive model- half same sex and opposite sex 
  • half non agg model- same sex or opposite sex 
  • Pp in experiment and control group matched for orignial levels of aggression. 
  • rated on a 5 per scale- physical&verbal agg, aggression towards objects and agg inhibition
  • Inter rater reliablity- teacher and experimenter
  • Child went into room and sat in corner, model went into corner of other room
  • Agg condition- model agg at bobo doll e.g. sat on and punched it & verbally agg e.g. sock him
  • Non-Agg condition- sat nicely and comments were non agg
  • Control group- no model
  • PP taken to another area w/ toys and told not allowed to play with them. they were then taken to another room
  • 2 judges watched through one way mirror

R- agg condition- children more aggressive- boys more Physically (25.8) & girls more verbally agg (13.7) (both scores with a female model 

boys spent more time playing w/ guns and girls w/ tea sets 

C- not all behaviour can be shaped by reward/punishment 

observing agg behaviour weakens social inhibitions

A-  see if aggression on film would be imitated 

Procedure

  • 48 boys and 48 girls (3-6 years old)
  • 3 groups w/24 children in each
  • watched filmed agg model or RL agg model- either same sex or not
  • only data gathered for filmed/cartoon model- R.L agg data was used from 1961 study 
  • Cartoon- model dressed as black cat
  • observation lasted 20 minutes at 5 second intervals 

R- overall ratings= Human Film- Boys- female model=114.5    girls= F model= 87.0 

cartoon- Boys= 117.2     G= 80.9 

C- observing filmed aggression lead to agg acts.

can be cathartic

A- see if behaviour would be imitated when they viewed a model being rewarded for their behaviour 

P- 33boys and 33 girls- Pp allocated to 3 conditions: 

  • model rewarded for agg behaviour 
  • model punished for agg behaviour 
  • no consequence 
  • Children followed researcher into room- TV showing programme about 5 mins long where a model exhibited agg behaviour
  • model walked up to the bobo doll and produced 4 distinctive aggressive acts
  • 1- punch nose and sat on it   2- threw balls at it    3- kicked the doll around the room              4-hit it on the head with a mallet 
  • in the rewarded condition- 2nd adult walked towards the model w/ fizzy drinks and sweets. told them theyre a 'strong champion'. 
  • punished condition- 2nd adult walked towards model shaking finger and sat on top of them hitting them with a rolled up newspaper 
  • children taken to another room and observed for 10 minutes. 2 oservers- neither had knowledge of what condition the children had seen

R- Pp were more likely to imitate behaviour when model was positiviely rewarded 

boys performed more imitative responses
