B2.7-Clasification & Biodiversity
B2.7-Clasification & Biodiversity
Kingdoms
There are 5 kingdoms,
Animals Multicellar
Plants All Green Plants
Fungi Mushroom,Yeast
Prokaryotes Bacteria,Blue Green Algae
Protoctist Amoeba,Chlorella,Plasmodium
Kingdom Classification-Morphological,DNA
Bacteria,
Single Celled Organisms,
Plants,
Fungi,
Animals,
Organisms have morphological and behavioural adaptations which enable them to survive in their enviroment.
Living Organisms
Non Flowering Plants,Do not produce flowers e.g. ferns and mosses.
Flowering Plants,Produce flowers.
Invetebrates,Do not have a backbone e.g. insects.
Vertebrates,Have a backbone.
Unique Features Of Verterbrates
Birds,Lungs,Feathers,Beaks
Mammals,Lungs,Fur
Fish,Absorbs oxygen through gills,Wet scales
Reptiles,Lungs,Dry skin,Fur
Amphibians,Lungs,Absorbs oxygen through moist skin
Classification
King,Prawn,Curry Or Fried Greasy Sausages
Kingdom,Animals,Able to move on their own.
Phylum,Chorodates,Have a backbone.
Class,Mammals,Chorodates with fur, hair and milk glands.
Order,Primates,Have a collar bone and grasping fingers.
Family,Hominid,Primates with a realtively flat faces and three dimensional vision.
Genus,Hominds with an upright posture and large brain
Species,Homo Sapiens,Members of the genus Homo, high forehead and thin skull bone
Sampling/Quadrat
A quadrat is a wooden or plastic square.
Obtain valid data by
Repeating,
Random sampling,
Count number of organisms in the quadrat.
Sampling Along a Transect
Sampling along a transect shows how the numbers of organisms change as we move across a habitat.
A transect is a line such as,a tape measure or piece of rope.
We use a quadrat to count the organisms at intervals on the transect.
Mark & Recapture
Scientist call this the capture/recapture method.
Method
1st Take a sample of the population.
2nd Mark the item in the sample and return them.
3rd Take a second sample.
4th See what fraction are marked.
Mark & Recapture 2
Possible Issues
None of the population have left.
Assume no new arrivals.
Assume no deaths or births.
Assume tags remain in tackt.
Equation
Population Size=1st Capture Times 2nd Capture Devided by the Amount Marked
Humans/Competition
Humans Fight For
Food,
Water,
Shelter,
Companionship,
Competition
Competition between different species,Interspecific Competition.
Competition between the same species,Intraspecific Competition.
Competive Species
Less competive species may face problems such as,
Having to move to another area,
Adapt to new survival stratagies,
Become extinct in that area,
Enviromental Resources
Individual organisms need resources from the enviroment e.g.
Food,
Water,
Light,
Minerals,
The size of the population may be effected by competition for these resources along with predation, disease and pollution.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity provides food, potential foods, industrial materials, new machines for humans well beimg.
Biodiversity and endangered species can be protected by,
- Local biodiversity action plans,
- Seed/Sperm banks,
- National Parks,
- Breeding programmes,
- Specific intrest,
- Covection on International Trade in Endangered Species,
Biological Control
Biological control is the issue of introducing ailen species and their effects on local wildlife.
Some species have been introduce deliberatley and accidentally in to area where there not suppose to be, some have become invasive and cause problems.
Invasive species may grow faster than native species upseting the eco system.
Native species may not be able to compete with them.
