Blood Pressure

  • measured in mmHg (millimetres of mercury)
  • has 2 measurements: SYSTOLIC (number written on the top- maximum pressure the heart can produce) and DIASTOLIC (written on the bottom- pressure between beats)
  • a healthy blood pressure ( around 120/80) can be maintaned by regular exercise and eating a balanced diet
  • increased blood pressure (caused by obesity, high alcohol intake, smoking and stress) leads to the bursting of blood vessels, which can cause damage to the brain (called a stroke) or kidneys
  • Low blood pressure can lead to dizziness and fainting( as blood supply to the brain is reduced)and poor circulation to other areas like the toes and fingers
