B1.3 Species
- Species ~ a group of organisms that can Interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
- Two closely related species can breed and produce Hybrids whom show characterisitcs of both parents.
- Many speices do not need to interbreed to produce off spring! i.e (plants and fungi)
- Mallard ducks can hyberdise with other closely related species. Thus so on this produces a ducks with a continuos range of characterisitics, rather than seperate species.
- ring species ~ a ring of populations, in which neighbouring populations that can intereed but the populations at the two ends of the chain cannot.
- An organisms latin name consists of two worrds, (Genus, species) this is known as the bionmical system.
- The bionomical system is also useful because organisms with the same common names may actually be diffrent.
- This helps scientist all over the use this system to cmmmunicate whatever their langauge.
