Nucleus

(Animal and Plant Cells)

Controls all activities of the cell and is surrounded by the nuclear membrane. It contans the genes on the chromosomes that carry the instructions for making te proteins needed to build new cells or new organisms.

1 of 8

Cytoplasm

(Animal and Plant Cells)

A liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life take place.

2 of 8

Cell Membrane

(Animal and Plant Cells)

Controls the passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cell. It also controls the movement of substances such as urea or hormones out of the cell.

3 of 8

Mitochondria

(Animal and Plant Cells)

Structures in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes place, releasing energy for the cell. They are very small.

4 of 8

Ribosomes

(Animal and Plant Cells)

Where protein synthesis takes place, amking all the proteins needed in the cellW

5 of 8

Chloroplasts

(Only in Plant Cells)

Found in all the green parts of a plant. They are green because they contin the green substance chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs light so the plant can make food by photosynthesis. Root cells don't have chloroplasts becaus ethey are underground and don't photosynthesise.

6 of 8

Permanent Vacuole

(Only in Plant Cells)

A space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap . This is important for keeping the cells rigid to support the plant.

7 of 8

Cell Wall

(Only in Plant Cells)

Made of cellulose that stregnthens the cell and gives it support.
