The purpose of a differential

To differentiate power delivery driven wheels allowing diffferent wheel speeds when cornering.

How to minimise the risk of overturing a FTFL when

  • Keep boom low
  • Avoid overloading the bucket
  • Use sensors to indicate load capacity
  • Avoid sharp/high speed turns
  • Operate RTFL correctly
  • Qualified operators
  • Work on level flat site

Which way would an operator lean when turning a lo

Opposite direction to the corner being turned

The operator works to replace the differential. The operator puts their weight over the wheel to allow the inner wheel to spin, making the turn efficient.

What action should be taken if the safe load indic

  • Stop using the machine
  • Inform the supervisior of the problem
  • Put a sign on the machine, to inform other staff
  • Arrange repairs

Advantages of an ATV compared to a tractor

  • An ATV causes less ground compaction
  • Can be operated in steeper ground conditions, than a tractor
  • Saves staff time doing jobs and saves money
  • Cheaper to buy and run than a tractor
  • Makes tractor available for other jobs
  • More manouverable when moving livestock

Points to be considered when preparing a risk asse

  • Condition of the machine and PPE
  • Operator skills and abilities
  • Ground conditions and weather
  • Topography of land
  • Time of day/light
  • Task being conducted
  • Lone working

Four different types of transmission found on ATVs

  • Manual
  • Automatic/hydrostatic
  • Constantly variable transmission (CVT)
  • Centrifrugal clutch

Areas of health and safety that impact on ATV and

  • LOLER - Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
  • PUWER - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
  • ROPS - Roll Over Protection System
  • FOPS - Falling Object Protection System
  • COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
  • RTA - Road Traffic Act
  • HSWA - Health and Safety at Work Act

Differences between a diesel powered ATV and a pet

Power delivery of a diesel has a different characteristic torque on a diesel (power) is delivered power in the rev range on a diesel engine.

Diesel is more economical.

Diesel is cheaper (red diesel).

Diesel is less problamatic in wet conditions, because there is no spark plug.

A diesel engine will last longer, because it is a compression. The components are produced to a higher specification.
