Atoms and Elements

HideShow resource information

The Nucleus

  • Its in the middle of the atom
  • Contains protons and neutrons
  • Protons are positively charged
  • Neutrons have no charge
  • Nucleus has positive charge overall
  • Tiny compared to rest of atom

The Electrons

  • Move around the nucleus
  • Negatively charged
  • Small but cover a lot of space
  • Occupy shells surrounding nucleus

Atom in General

  • No charge overall
  • Size of electron and proton charges are the same
  • Number of Protons = Number of Electrons
  • If electrons are added or removed then atom becomes charged
  • A charged atom is called an ion.
