As You Like It: Theme of family
At first it seems that family problems will be central to the play as Orlando begins act one discussing his problems with his family to Adam.
Oliver's treatment of his brother shows how bitterness can destroy family harmony. Though Oliver changes when he is in the forest of Arden, he becomes a better person.
Duke Frederick does not appear to care for anyone in his family but himself as he sends both his brother and his niece to the forest away from him. Again, as he enters the forest he becomes a better person just as Oliver did.
The play then ends with reconciliations and marriages which highlights the beginnings of new families and the importance of the pastoral lifestyle in the creation of these families.
