Carbohydrates (reducing and non reducing sugars) tests

Carbohydrate tests

Reducing sugar test (glucose, maltose)

  • Add benedicts solution (turns solution blue)
  • Heat till boiling
  • Copper is given out (turns solution orange)

Non Reducing sugar test (sucrose)

  • Add hydrochloric acid to split sugar into monomers
  • Heat
  • Add sodium hydrogen carbonate to neutralise acid 
  • (Repeat reducing sugar test)

Protein Test (Biurette)

For all types of proteins

  • Add biurette solution (turning solution blue)
  • Add sodium hydroxide powder
  • Add few drops of dilute copper sulphate
  • Shake well
  • Solution will turn purple
