Chapter 1

Heat transfer (1.1- 1.5)

Heat energy is transferred by conduction, convection and radiation        

Conduction and convection invole particles but radiation does not                     

Dark, matt surfaces are good absorbers and good emmiters of heat radiation.    

Light, shiny surfaces are poor absorbers and poor emitters of heat radiation.      

The rate at which somthing radiates heat depends on it's surface area and how much hotter it is than it surrondings

Chapter 2

Using energy (2.1- 2.4)

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed from one form to another

Not all energy transformations are usful, some energy is always 'wasted'

All energy is eventually trandferred to the surrondings, which become warmer

Efficinecy = Useful energy tranferred / total energy supplied

Electrical energy (3.1- 3.4)

Power is the anount of energy transferred each second

Power is measured in WATTS. Symbol = W

Energy is measured in JOULES symbol = J

Electricity is transferred around the countru trough the national grid

Energy transfered = Power x Time

The kilowatt- hour is another unit of energy, which is used to measure the amount of electricity used at home.

Chapter 4

Generating electricity (4.1- 4.4)

Some power station use non- renewable sources of energy such as coal and natural gas

In nuclear power station, energy is produced by nuclear fission

Some renewable energy sourses include- wind, waves, tides, falling water & sun

There are advantages and disadvantages using both renewable and noon- renewable energy sources
