Physiology in Ancient Egypt

Breathing

The Ancient Egyptians got very close to understanding breathing. They thought air was drawn in through the nose into the lunfs, then to the heart and to the rest of the body.

Nervous System

They knew that the spinal cord was important for transferring information to the lower part of the body- notes in a papyrus scroll mention a patient 'not knowing his two legs and his two arms' because of a dislocation of the neck. However, they don't realise that the brain controls the rest of the body (mummification).

The Heart

They didn't know about the circulation of blood, but they did say that the heart could speak through the vessels to all limbs. They also felt patients' pulses and knew that a weak heart was worrying.

They also believed that diseases were spread to the body by vessels from the bowels.
