Aerobic Respiration

Glucose + Oxygen ----> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)

  • Used for most of the time in our bodies
  • Releases more energy than anaerobic respiration
  • Not as quick as anaerobic respiration

Anaerobic Respiration

Glucose -----> Lactic Acid (+Energy)

  • Quicker energy release
  • Not as efficient
  • Lactic Acid builds up in muscles causing cramps
  • After exercise oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid into oxygen and water, so deep breathing continues
  • This is called OXYGEN DEBT
