An Inspector Calls

                                   ERIC

  • A capitalist at the start of the play but by the end he becomes a socialist due to the Inspector's influence.
  • Stands up for Eva to Birling by answering him back which was unusual for children to question their parents authority.
  • "(downstage)" not important in family, yet he has more morals than all of them
  • .
  • "why shouldnt they try for higher wages? we try for the highest possible prices." standing up for what he believes in. He will become the new owner of factory so he will make that change.- context as many middle class businesses ran in family for generations and Eric would be the one to change the way the business ran possibly causing change for society.
  • "a state when a chap easily turns nasty" using prostitutes was usual for upper class men. "easily" doesn't take much to get Eric 'nasty' and take advantage of women- used to it?
  • "what we did to her that matters" important that everyone takes responsibility for their own actions. "we" group responsibility. Reminding everyone of their part in Eva's death. Socialist view to 'share'.
