"Arthur Birling is a heavy-looking, a rather portentous man in his middle fifties with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech." This is a brief description of Mr Birling and shows what class he fits into.
"You're just the kind of son-in-law I always wanted" Birling wants a son-in-law that will allow their family to progress, and with business.
"hard-headed businessman" This shows that Mr Birling is very focused on his company.
"Inspector, I've told you before, I don't like your tone nor the way you're handling this inquiry. And I don't propose to give you much more rope." Mr Birling is not liking the way the Inspector has made an introduction.
