Role of the buffalo and horses

BUFFALO

  • Women and children cut up the buffalo ( eaten raw or cooked and some was stored for winter)
  • Every part of the buffalo was used for food, clothing and equipment (except the heart as they believed it gave new life to a herd)

HORSES

  • Introduced by Spanish inavders
  • Catching the buffalo was quicker on horse back
  • Wealth and Status measured by how many horses an indian had
  • Used in war
  • Carried Indians and their belongings

Nomadic Lifestyle

They moved with the buffalo threfore everything focused around that nomadic lifestyle

The Journey West

  • This joruney began at Independence, Missouri
  • It took 8 to 9 months
  • They usually began in April or May
  • Early migrants used mountain men or indians as guides 
  • Later migrants used pamphlets 

PROBLEMS FACED TRAVELLING WEST

The plains were made dangerous by:

  • Quicksand
  • Extreme heat
  • Storms
  • Lack of supplies 
  • Indians 

Also they had to cross TWO mountain ranges:

The Rockies then the Sierra Nevada or the Blue Mountains

STIMULATED MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND MONEY WEST IN THE 1850s

MADE CALIFORNIA RICH

MADE SAN FRANCISCO AN IMPORTANT PORT AND FINANCIAL CENTRE

RESULTED IN NEW RAILWAY BEING BUILT FROM EAST TO WEST

MADE USA A WORLD LEADER OF TRADE

HOWEVER 

IT VIRTUALLY WIPED OUT NATIVE INDIANS OF CALIFORNIA 

ALSO CAUSED WORKERS FROM PLACES SUCH AS CHINA AND MEXICO TO SUFFER FROM RACIAL CONFLICT

The Mormons

JOSEPH SMITH

  • Founded the church of Latter-Day Saints 
  • His followers were known as Mormons
  • He taught Mormons to obey him because he said his decisions were inspired by God
  • He did persuasive public speaking that meant numbers grew by several hundred by 1830
  • he was murdered in illinois, 1845

MOVING

  • NEW YORK STATE
  • OHIO
  • MISSOURI
  • ILLINOIS 
  • UTAH

BRIGHAM YOUNG

  • Became leader of the Mormons when Smith died
  • He went to find land near Great Salt Lake that no one wanted (Utah*)
  • He split everyone into groups with a leader 
  • Everyone had a specifc role and he insisted on discipline and regular rest for the journey

REASONS FOR MORMON PERSECUTION

  • Their success
  • desire to be friends with plains indians and free slaves
  • Practice of polygamy
  • Their police force (Danites)

Utah first belonged to Mexico but became a Us territory in 1848. Utah finally became a state in 1890 as long as the governor was not a mormon and polygamy was banned.

SUCCESSFUL IN UTAH?

  • Brigham Young was in charge and made good decisions 
  • Towns ran efficiently
  • Mormon church owened all land, water,timber which were allocated to families
  • Perpetual Emigration Fund

*Perpetual Emigration Fund was a fund Mormons paid into and the money was then lent to new Mormons overseas to pay for their passage to America.
