Aerobic Respiration

Aerobic Respiration- with oxygen

two substances produced are carbon dioxide and water

Aerobic equation: Glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water (+ energy released)  C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O

Mammals and birds use energy to maintain body temperature, protein growth, muscle contractions and cell division

Occurs in the mitochondria of cells

Anaerobic Respiration

Glucose -lactic acid + little energy

Anaerobic - without oxygen

Build up of lactic acid= muscle fatigue

less energy is released as glucose not broken down

Oxygen debt- amount of oxygen needed for recovery after exercise

remaining energy released when lactic acid breaks down and an oxygen debt increases.

occurs in bacteria and yeast called fermentation which produces beer and bread
