Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)

  • a woodworking glue
  • 2 types; interior + exterior
  • interior PVA will join as long as it doesn't get wet
    • could be used to glue knobs to the chest of drawers
  • exterior = more expensive
    • can withstand damp or wet conditions
    • could be used in the construction of a shed

Contact Adhesive

  • very strong
  • is rubber based
  • can be used for most household materials - particularly floor tiles
  • apply to both surfaces
  • keep surfaces apart until glue is tacky
  • then stick together
  • make sure area is well-ventilated - gives off harmful fumess

Epoxy Resin + Superglue

Epoxy Resin

  • sticks to almost anything
  • common type is Araldite
  • 2 separate substances are mixed in equal parts; 1 yelllow 1 clear
  • once mixed it'll stick to almost anything
    • ceramic to ceramic
    • metal to wood
    • wood to plastic etc.
  • takes about 15mins to harden
  • expensive

Superglue

  • more expenisve thatn epoxy resin
  • sticks to most things
  • after applying slight pressure gives a very strong bond

Acrylic Cement

  • used for plastics
  • common type = Tensol
  • plastic to plastic
  • used in orthopaedic surgery - artificial joints to bones
  • the 2 plastics need to be clamped together for 24hours
  • it also gives off harmful fumes
