WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ADDICTION AND DEPEN

Addiction is a out of control, compulsive behaviour to use a substance to gain a feeling of euphoria or high where as dependency is not being able to function a normal life without the substance and can experience withdrawal effects when absent from it.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUBSTANCE MISUSE AN

Substance misuse is when a substance is not followed by their guidelines or prescription whereas substance abuse is taking a substance to alter an individual's state of mind e.g. to feel euphoria or high.

SYMPTOMS ON THE ICD-10

Persistence despite harm- continued use of substance despite awareness and undestanding of negative effects

Difficulty in controlling use- wishing to stop or slow but unable to resist

Salience- addictive behaviour is more important that other activities such as family and school

Withdrawal effects- when apart from substance, withdrawal symptoms are experienced

Tolerance- increased amounts of substance are needed to achieve the desired effect
