A3.2 solving equations involving fractions

IF EQUATIONS HAVE FRACTIONS- one fraction

1.) multiply both sides of the equation by the denominator

Example 1: 3x+2 / 4 = 2x-1

  (x4)

   3x +2 = 4 (2x-1)

THEN SOLVE

1 of 2

A3.2 solving equations involving fractions

IF EQUATIONS HAVE FRACTIONS- two fraction

1.) multiply both sides by the product (multiply the denominators together) of the denominators.

Example 2: 2x-1/5 = 3x-4/8

  (x8x5)

  8(2x- 1)=5(3x- 4)

YOU CAN SIMPLIFY EQUATIONS INVOLVING SEVERAL FRACTIONS BY MULTIPLYING EACH TERM BY EVERY DENOMIATOR!!!

Example 3: x/5 - x/6 = 10 (x 5)

   x- 5x/6 = 50   (x6)

  6x - 5x = 300

x = 300
