Characteristics of Mental Disorders

Affective disorder: Depression

  • Depressed mood
  • Loss of interset, enjoyment and pleasure in almost all activities
  • Increased fatiguability
  • Reduced self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate/excessive guilt
  • Reduced concentration, attention and ability to think
  • Disturbed sleep or insomnia
  • Diminished appetite, body weight loss
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Self-harm
  • Suicide attempt

Minimum duration: 2 week period, 5 or 6 symptoms (2 major)

Psychotic disorder: Schizophrenia

  • Delusions or delusional perception
  • Hallucinations
  • Disorganised or irrelevant speech, neologisms (made up words)
  • Hallucinatory voices 
  • Thought echo/broadcasting
  • Culturally inappropriate delusions
  • Catatonic or grossly disorganised behaviour
  • Negative symptoms such as diminished expression, social withdrawal, idleness, aimlessness 
  • Change in overall quality of personal behaviour
  • Lack of ability to self-care

At least one month with major symptom and 2 others

Anxiety Disorer: Agoraphobia

Marked fear or anxiety about 2 or more of these situations which provoke an anxiety attack and situations are actively avoided:

  • Using public transport
  • Being in open spaces
  • Being in enclosed spaces
  • Standing in a crowd or a line
  • Being outside of the home alone
  • Travelling away from home

Fear is out of proportion to the danger and excessive. Psychological or autonomic symptoms must be manifestations of anxiety and not secondary to other symptoms such as delusions or obsessional thoughts.

Fear/avoidance persists for more than 6 months and cause significant distress and impairment of normal functioning
