A Street Car named Desire: Scene 2.

?

Stanley & Stellas relationship.

  • When Stella tells Stanley that shes taking Blanche out he isnt happy, Stanley: "How about my supper huh?" This is because Stanley sees his wife as a sterotypical wife nad expects her to make his dinner for him. - Male Dominated Relationship.
  • Stanley doesnt like Stella bossing him or telling him what to do, Stanley: "since when do you give me orders?", him questioning Stella makes him seem quite agressive. It again shows that their relationships male dominated.
  • Stanley proves to the audience that he cannot be trusted with what Stella tells him, she asks him to, "Dont mention the baby,". Later on in the scene Stanley then tells Blanche that Stellas, "going to have a baby."
    • Stanley wrongly tells Blanche, he can be seen as trying to stir the 2 Dubois' relationship and cause argument. - Stanleys untrusted.

Blanche.

  • In motif in connection to Blanche's bathing is introuduced. The opening scene description reads, (Blanche is Bathing). It can show Blanches attempt to restable herself mentally and regenrate her looks. - Both obsessions of her.
    • This points backed up by Stella saying, "Shes soaking in a hot tub to quiet her nerves."
  • Later in the scene before her conversation with Stanley she changes into, (a red satin robe). This foreshaodows whats to come in their 2's conversation. - danger, blood and death.
  • Blanche uses her spray as a form of distraction, (she sprays herself with her atomizer; then playfully sprays him with it) This could be,
    • 1. Because she doesnt want to discuss about Belle Reve because its upsetting for her after everything shes went through with all of the deaths.
  • Stanley says that; "If i didnt know that you were my wifes sister, Id get ideas". - This shows that Blanche isnt acting the normal southern belle that she should be, more like a prosititute.
  • By the end of the scene when shes learned of Stellas pregnancy Blanche says, "hes what we need to mix with our blood", Blanches suggesting that she belives old tradition shouldnt matter anymore and and traditional marriages are to change.
    • This could be because Stella got pregnant with Stanley whos different although Blanche's husband was secretly with another man.

    • He again mentions this later to blanches face. "There is such thing in this State of Lousiana as the Napolenoic code."
  • Stanleys anger towards Blanche begins to be seen in this scene, on 2 occasions throughout he mentions that, "Iv got an acquantance", whos going to check the value of Blanches items and see the worth. This can show how determind he is to get rid of her.

Stella.

  • Stella seems to cover alot for her sister in this scene,
    • First when it comes too all the clothes, "Those are inexpensive fur coats." And later also about the jewlerry, "A rhinestone tiara she wore to a costume ball."- always covers for her sister, as she eas likley used to doing this as Blanche enjoys being dominnent.
    • She again covers when Stanley asks about papers proving that Belle Reve was really lost, "There werent any papers, she didnt show any paprtd, I dont care about papers".

[Stellas covering up here can be seen more as Stella not wanting to talk about Belle Reve due to he negetive memories and her leaving to being her new life in New Orleans.]

The real reason Belle Reve was lost.

  • "our improvident grandfathers and father and uncles and brothers exchanged the land for their epic fornications."
    • Blanche tells Stanley the real reason that Belle Reve was lost and its decline into becoming lost occured was due to the males of the Dubois family who kept selling the land to buy more slaves which some have intimate relationships with.
