5.6 Sound

Sound is caused by mechanical vibrations in a substance. It can travel through liquids solids and gases, generally sound waves are fastest in solids and slowest in gases. They cannot travel through a vacuum (like space).

The frequency range of the normal human ear is from about 20Hz to 20kHz.

Sound waves are longitudinal.

Reflections of sound are called echoes.
