Structure

-split into 2 movements rather than 3
-these 2 movements are split into 4 sections

Movement 1:

-andante section in sonata form (Schoenberg avoided due to tonal resolution)
-allegretto section= dance-like section

Instrumentation (rhythm)

-addition of alto saxophone (unusual for traditional concerto)

-The concerto is scored for flute, piccolo, oboes, clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoons, contrasbassoon, horns, trumpets, trombones, tubas, timpani, percussion, harp and strings 

-the orchestra combines the slow pace with triplets' rhythmic jumps with chromatic chords. The solo part is precipitated by the chromatic pace on sextuplets rhythmic formulas.

Melody

-The violin carries out its part with rubato passages

-there is call and response. Flute plays a melody at bar 28 then the violin at bar 30 plays a transposed version

-Berg eventually reveals the row but not in order, on the violin until bar 15

-disjunct, with large intervals 

-the dodecaphonic series is played by the solo violin in its real state then reversed

- alternation between minor and major chords in opening

-use of chromaticism

-use of 12 tone row

-chromatic chords
