Xylem

  • Xylem structure:
    • no living contents in the hollow xylem vessel
    • thick wall
    • continuous column
    • cell walls are made of lignin
    • lignin makes xylem water-proo
  • Xylem's role:
    • transports water and ions
    • it is a transpiration stream
    • has a continuous column of water
    • moves water from roots to leaves
    • water is lost through transpiration

Phloem

  • Phloem:
    • transports glucose from site of photosynthesis to other parts of plant
    • have sieve plates that allow cytoplasm to be connected
    • companion cell controlls movement of the contents
