EVENTS

  • Use of new hated prayer book by priest caused people to rebel 
  • Arundell led protestors in Bodmin and issued a list of articles 
  • Attemots by gentry to put down devon and cornwell rebels failed 
  • Somerset's government tried to find a settlement by using Lord Russel, a catholic council member with a small army, took russel a month to put down the rebels 

RESULTS 

  • 4000 rebels killed, welsh- the leader of the rebellion was hanged without trial
  • economic situaton worsened
  • government suspended for 2 months
  • somerset's authority questioned

KETT'S REBELLION CAUSES

ECONOMIC+SOCIAL

  • poor harvests
  • bad local government had causedtrouble between landlords and ordinary people
  • high unemployment due to collapse of cloth industry

RELIGIOUS
don't want to return to catholicism just want better trained clergy able to preform thier duties

LOCAL

  • perosnal differences between 2 local men flowerdew and kett
  • no person strong enough to locally put down rebellion
  • grievances against local councillors not king

KETT'S REBELLION EVENTS/ RESULTS

EVENTS

  • Robert Kett lead mob after his enclosure was attacked by them
  • They camped outside norwhich and thre
  • atened to take the city 
  • Royal Herals was sent to offer a pardon- this was rejected 
  • Kett had 16000 followers and captured Norwhich 
  • government sent 12000 troops under the duke of northumberland to put down the rebellion 
  • Northumberland attacked within three days - 3000 rebels killed Kett arrested 

RESULTS

  • Kett executed
  • Edward throne not threatened like western 
  • Somerset overthrown by councillor's he was blamed for rebellions inadequate response to them
