Newton's 3rd law of motion = When two objects interact they extert equal and opposite forces on each other.

Principle of Conservation of Momentum = The momentum of a system never changes, unless an external force acts on it.

Therefore if two objects collide, both the momentums change, but if one gains, the other will lose an equal amount. This way the initial momentum = final momentum.
