Psychoanalytic therapy intends to...

identify transferences, and to bring them to consciousness. Transference occurs in various kinds of relationship (Singer & Singer, 1992). For example, it can occur with patient and doctor, or student and teacher. It can exist in a romantic relationship where an individual may be needy and demanding like they once were with their parents. These types of transference have been demonstrated by the attachment styles experienced in infancy carrying forward into adulthood (Waters et al., 2000).

How people relate to their emotions varies by...

Cultural tradition:

  •  Western society has developed practices and rituals to deal with people's "wrong relations" with themselves, such as therapy and rehabilitation clinics.
  • Buddhists by contrast cultivate awareness of emotions. Western world has transformed this into mindfulness meditation (Segal et al., 2002)
