conformity
Compliance Altering behaviour to that of a group in order to
gain acceptance and avoid rejection
Weak, temporary form of conformity
Only displayed in the presence of the group
Public but not private acceptance of the group's
behaviour
Identification Altering behaviour to that of a group because
group membership is desirable, e.g. to gain a
promotion at work
Stronger form of conformity
Public and private acceptance of the group's
behaviour
Temporary form of conformity that is not
maintained outside the group
Internalisation Truly altering behaviour
Involves acceptance of a group's belief system
Strong form of conformity
Public and private acceptance
Behaviour is not dependent on the presence of
the group
