The Tacoma Bridge

The Tacoma Bridge was built in the 1940s. The wind caused the bridge to oscillate at it's natural frequency causing it to create huge oscillations - making the bridge look like jelly as it moved. It had a period of 5s.

Eventually the stress of the oscillations caused the bridge to collapse. No humans were injured or killed, but one dog who had been left in a car was killed.
