The relationship between religion and science
There are different views on the relationship between religion and science. Some people argue
that:
Religion and science are in conflict. They are separate and incompatible because religion
relies on faith whereas science relies on facts
Religion and science are not in conflict. They overlap and are compatible, because religion
may be based on faith, but also involves reason, and science may be based on facts, but also
involves speculation
Religion and science looks at things differently, with religion concentrating on the why
questions such as, why are we here? And science concentrating on the how questions, such
as how did the universe come into existence?
It is too simplistic to say that religion asks why and science asks how. Both religion and
science try to answer the why and how questions, but they do it in different ways
We need both religion and science to understand the world
RELIGION SCIENCE

faith
Explains value and importance Explains processes and methods
Not open to scientific testing Open to change as evidence becomes
available
Can be taken literally or as stories containing Taken as explanations of how things happen
important truths
I think that religion and science should be kept separate from science because they are
completely different. I also think they should be kept separate because religion relies on
faith whereas science relies on facts.
