· Sperling (1960): participants saw a grid of
digits and numbers for a blink of an eye. They
were asked to write down all 12 items. When
asked to report the whole thing, recall was
poorer (5 items recalled, 42%) than when
asked to give one row only (3 items, 75%) This
shows that information decays rapidly in the

Glanzer and Cunitz (1966): participants given a
list of about 20 words, presented one at a
time, and then asked to recall any words they
could remember. You tend to remember
words from the start of the list (a primacy
effect) and from the end of the list (recency
effect) but are less good at remembered the
ones in the middle. The primacy effect occurs
because the first words are best rehearsed
and transferred to LTM. The recency effect
occurs because these words are in STM when
