The fluid mosaic model
The phospholipids form 75% of the cell surface membrane. This is about 7nm thick.
Singer and Nicholson proposed their `fluid mosaic' theory in 1972 to describe the structure
of the cell membrane. It's called a fluid mosaic model because:
1. The molecules move or sway within their respective layers.
2. Protein molecules (and cholesterol) are dotted randomly within the 75%
Intrinsic proteins: completely span the membrane.
Extrinsic proteins: are only found on the inner and outer surface of the membrane.
