CONFERENCES 1943-1945
TEHERAN CONFERENCE: 1943 - Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt agree to have sphere of influence
over Eastern Europe. Disagree on: Stalin wants Germany punished, the rest want it rebuilt.
Yalta Conference, February 1945 - the war was not yet over. Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt agree
that Germany should pay reparations and be split into 4 zones of occupation. Disagreements : Stalin
wants communism, Roosevelt wants elections.
The Percentage Deal ­ Split Romania, Greece, Hungary, Yugoslovakia, and Bulgaria up.
Churchill gave Eastern Europe to Stalin.
ROOSEVELT DIES, REPLACED WITH TRUMAN (USA)
CHURCHILL LOST ELECTION, REPLACED WITH ATLEE (UK)
Potsdam Conference, July 1945 - the war was over. Stalin, Attlee and Truman met to discuss
Germany. There were open disagreements. Stalin wants complete control, Truman isn't happy.
The aims of both conferences were the same, but without a common enemy, the allies no longer
have to stick together.
1946 ­ CHURCHILL SAYS THERE IS IRON CURTAIN
1946 ­ THE LONG TELEGRAM. TRUMAN RECEIVED WORRYING NEWS IN A TELEGRAM THAT REPORTED
STALIN HAD GIVE A SPEECH FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF CAPITALISM. THERE WOULD BE NO PEACE
WITH USSR WHILE IT WAS OPPOSED TO CAPITALISM. USSR WAS BUILDING UP MILITARY POWER
MEANWHILE.. NOVIKOVS TELEGRAM (EMBASSADOR OF USSR) SENT TO STALIN WAS EQUALLY
CONCERNING. STATED; AMERICA WANTED TO DOMINATE THE WORLD. FOLLOWING ROOSEVELTS
DEATH USA GOV WAS NO LONGER INTERESTED IN CO-OPERATION WITH USSR. USA WAS PREPARED
TO GO TO WAR WITH USSR.
1947 ­ COMINFORM ­ ALLIANCE OF ALL COMMUNIST COUNTRY
1947 ­ TRUMAN DOCTRINE ­ TO STOP THE SPREAD OF COMMUNISM BY CONTAINMENT.
1948 ­ MARSHALL PLAN ­ AID TO COUNTRIES TO STOP THEM FROM CONVERTING TO COMMUNISM,
STALIN STOPPED COMINFORM COUNTRIES FROM TAKING THE MONEY.
1949 ­ COMECON ­ STALINS ANSWER TO MARSHALL PLAN. AIMED TO MINIMISE AMERICA SPHERE
OF INFLUENCE. RECOVER EASTERN EUROPE ECONOMY AND BOYCOTTED MARSHALL PLAN.
1948 ­ 1956 : DEVELOPMENT OF THE COLD WAR.
1948 ­ BERLIN BLOCKADE ­ NEW CURRENCY WAS STRONGER SO PEOPLE MOVED TO WEST GERMANY
TO CAPITALISM. STALIN IS ANGERED BY FORM OF TRIZONIA AND DEUTSCHMARK CURRENCY IN
WESTERN GERMANY SO BLOCKS OFF ROADS TO WEST BERLIN, U.S AIRLIFTED FOOD INTO WEST BERLIN,
THIS MADE STALIN LOOK WEAK. HOSTILITY GREW BETWEEN EAST AND WEST.
