Summary of developmental part 3
Day care- the effects of it on aggression and peer relations
Aggression (AO1)
NICHD study in America found the more time a child spent in day care of
any kind of quality, the more adults rated them as aggressive, disobedient
and assertive
Children who attend day care full time were 3 times more likely to argue
have temper tantrums lie and hit others, when compared to children who
don't attend day care.
Aggression (AO2)
the relationship between day care and aggression is only a correlation,
therefore we can't be certain of a cause and effect relationship, so we can't
say day care is a cause of aggression
The NICHD study found a stronger factor influencing aggression is the
mother's sensitivity to the child. The more sensitive they are the less
aggressive the children are. Day care isn't the only factor influencing
Peer relations (AO1)
Belsky and Rovine found that children who spend a lot of time in day care
before the age of 1 were more likely to be insecurely attached to their
parents, suggesting they will have poorer peer relationships when they are
Clarke-Stewart found that children who attend day care were advanced in
their social development. They were more independent, behaved themselves
at the dinner table, complied with requests and had better interactions with

correlated to the amount of friends they have in school.
The results from the EPPE project found that high quality day care
improved social, intellectual and behavioural development and that the
earlier a child started day care, the bigger the improvement on intellectual
development. Children who had been in day care longer also have better
sociability, concentration and independence. Children from disadvantaged
backgrounds benefitted more from day care.
