Citizenship Vocabulary
Prejudice - any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favourable or
unfavourable without previous knowledge or reason.
Discrimination ­ treating people less favourably because of their
age/sexuality/gender/ethnicity/colour of skin.
Stereotyping ­ A form of categorising people.
Labelling - a short word or phrase descriptive of a person.
Fair Trade - to sell (a commodity) under a fair-trade agreement. Trade in
which fair prices are paid to producers in developing countries.
Ethical Trade - an umbrella term for all types of business practices that
promote more socially and/or environmentally responsible trade.
Globalisation - growth to a global or worldwide scale, largely as a result of
deregulation and improved communications
Aid programmes ­ provide help to overseas crisis stricken areas.
International human rights law - refers to the body of international law
designed to promote and protect human rights at the international, regional
and domestic levels. As a form of international law, international human
rights law is primarily made up of treaties, agreements between states
intended to have binding legal effect between the parties that have agreed to
Human Rights Act 1998 UK - Its aim is to "give further effect" in UK law to the
rights contained in the European Convention on Human Rights. The Act
makes available in UK courts a remedy for breach of a Convention right,
without the need to go to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
It also totally abolished the death penalty in UK law.
Civil law - The system of law concerned with private relations between
members of a community rather than criminal, military, or religious affairs
Criminal law - A system of law concerned with those who commit crimes
UN - United Nations: an organisation of independent states formed in 1945 to
promote international peace and security
EU - European Union: an international organization of European countries
formed after World War II to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation
among its members
Commonwealth - An international association consisting of the UK together
with states that were previously part of the British Empire, and
