Geography questions
Suggest reasons why increasing numbers of the world's people are affected by floods (4)
More people are affected by floods due to global warming which causes sea level rise this is because of ice
sheet melt. In other words as the temperature is increasing ice melts and turns into liquid this is known as
thermal expansion. Also due to global warming there is an increase in storms for example 26 degrees is
reached more often in the hurricane belt.
Suggest how physical geography of some coastal areas makes them more at risk from rising sea
levels than others (4)
Coastal areas are more at risk from rising sea levels as they're prone to natural disasters, especially
hurricanes. For example the hurricane on Niue caused the whole population to migrate to New Zealand.
Also because coastal areas have low lying land they're at risk from flooding. There's a lower risk for coasts
that have mangroves as rainwater is intercepted and therefore there is a lower risk of flooding.
Suggest how the human geography of areas such as Bangladesh or the Maldives makes them
especially vulnerable to sea-level rise (3)
As they have dense and growing populations, with rapid urbanisation at the coast. Also because they're
LEDCs they have limited resources and can't afford to protect themselves against sea level rise for example
building dykes. Finally increasing degradation of natural environments makes areas especially vulnerable to
sea-level rise.
Explain why it is difficult to predict future sea-level rise (4)
It's difficult to predict future sea-level rise because of the difficulty of estimating the future of greenhouse
gas emissions, also because of whether the sea-level prediction model adopts a `business as usual` or
sustainable scenario. Finally it's difficult to predict the future of sea-level rise because it's difficult to predict
the impact of thermal expansion of oceans and melting of ice sheets and glaciers.
Explain why some nations will suffer more than others from the impacts of predicted sea level
rise (5)
Some nations will suffer more than others from the impacts of predicted sea level rise due to economic
factors for example in the Netherlands they can afford to defend themselves by building a complex system
of dykes and coastal sand dunes whereas in the Maldives due to it being an LEDC and having limited
resources they can't afford to protect themselves against the impacts of sea level rise. Also some nations
will suffer more because as they can't afford to defend themselves they will lose more land and if they
can't afford to defend themselves it's quite likely that they're a LEDC and therefore there may be a high
population density meaning more people living on the coast and more people being affected. Also an island
may suffer more because of its small physical size therefore when sea level rise occurs they have nowhere
to flee to due to their remoteness.
