Rise of the Labour Party
o 1884 ­ Trade Unionists begin to enter parliament. The
liberals allow them to stand as Liberal party candidates, they
were called `LibLabs'
o 1893 ­ Independent Labour Party (ILP) formed by Kier
Hardie, who becomes first Labour MP.
o 1900 ­ Labour Representation Committee set up to ensure
fair representation for working men.
o 1906 ­ Name `Labour party' adopted. 29 Labour MP's
o 1908 ­ Osborne Judgment tries to split Labour from the
o 1918 ­ 59 Labour MP's
