RELATIONSHIPS - DISSOLUTION ESSAY (pink points are evaluation points)
INTRODUCE ESSAY TWO SIMILAR MODELS WHICH ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN THE PROCESS OF
RELATIONSHIP DISSOLUTION ARE
DUCK'S PHASE MODEL (1986) AND LEE'S STAGE MODEL (1984)
THE FIRST STAGE IN THESE MODELS IS THE BREAKDOWN PHASE AND THE DISSSATISFACTION
STAGE .IN THIS STAGE AT LEAST ONE OF THE PARTNERS IS UNHAPPY WITH THE RELATIONSHIP
NEXT IS THE INTRAPSYCHIC PHASE AND EXSPOSURE STAGE WHICH IS WHERE THE UNHAPPY
PERSON BROODS OVER THE PROBLEMS THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED IN THE RELATIONSHIP THE
NEXT STAGE BEGINS WHEN THEY BEGIN TO COMPLAIN OPENLY
THIS IS THE DYADIC PHASE AND NEGOTIATION STAGE WHERE ISSUES ARE RAISED AND THE
PARTNER IS CONFRONTED ABOUT THE PROBLEMS IN THE RELATIONSHIP
THE FOURTH STAGE IS WHERE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MODELS. DUCK'S
MODEL ENTERS THE SOCIAL PHASE WHERE FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE TOLD ABOUT THE BREAK
UP WHEREAS LEE'S MODEL OFFERS A CHANCE FOR RECONCILIATION WITH THE RESOLUTION
ATTEMPTS STAGE. THIS IS WHERE PARTNERS MAY TRY TO RESOLVE THEIR ISSUES AND GET
BACK TOGETHER.
AT THIS STAGE THEIR MAY BE GENDER DIFFERENCES WHICH ARE NOT ACCOUNTED FOR AS
WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE ALREADY DISCUSSED THEIR RELATIONSHIP ISSUES WITH
FRIENDS OR FAMILY AND MEN DO NOT HAVE THE SAME SOCIAL SUPPORT GROUPS AS
WOMEN DP
THE FIFTH AND FINAL STAGE IS THE GRAVE DRESSING PHASE AND THE TERMINATION STAGE.
THE RELATIONSHIP HAS ENDED AND NOW TAKES A PLACE IN THEIR OWN PERSONAL HISTORY
DUCK'S MODEL IS PESSIMISTIC IT OFFERS NO HOPE FOR RECONCILIATION
BOTH MODELS HAVE USEFUL PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR INSTANCE A MARRIAGE
COUNCILER COULD USE THE MODELS TO IDENTIFY THE STAGE A COUPLE IS ON AND SUGGEST
APPROPRIATE RECONCILIATION TECHNIQUES/ GUIDANCE
THE MODELS DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE REASONS FOR THE END OF A
RELATIONSHIP
THE MODELS ARE TO RIGID- PEOPLE MAY NOT FOLLOW ALL THE STAGES IN ORDER OR AT
ALL
REDUCTIONIST REDUCES THE COMPLEX BREAK UP OF A RELATIONSHIP INTO STAGES
DOES NOT ACCOUNT FOR INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
ASSUMES PARTNERS WILL GET OVER EACH OTHER IN ACTUAL FACT THIS MAY NOT
HAPPEN
NOT ACCOUNT FOR CULTURAL DIFFERNCES
IGNORES THE IMPACT ON COUPLES WITH CHILDREN
RESEARCH FOCUSES ON PRE MARITAL COUPLES - THIS WOULD BE VERY DIFFERNT FOR
MARRIED COUPLES WHO GO THROUGH A DIVORECE
IGNORES IMPACT ON BREAKEES AND BREAKERS
SUPPORTED BY AKERT (1992)- STUDIED 344 STUDENTS AND FOUND THAT BREAKEES SUFFER
FROM MORE PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS IE, DISRUPTED SLEEPING AND EATING PATTERNS, FEELING
SICK AND MORE LIKELY TO SUFFER DEPRESSION
STUDENTS NOT REPRESENTATIVE
