REURBANISATION
Reurbanisation: the movement of people back to an inner city or city centre. Usually occurs in
response to urban regeneration policies.
There are three main processes by which reurbanisation occurs:
1. Gentrification ­ the inmigration of people into housing which has been improved in quality
2. Propertyled Regeneration Schemes ­ the inmigration of people n response to large scale
investment designed to address wider social, economic and environmental troubles of the
area
3. Sustainable Communities ­ providing homes, jobs and reliable incomes to improve quality of
life and opportunities to maximize income, education and health
Gentrification
The process of housing improvement, associated with low income groups displaced from inner cities
by more affluent groups.
Mostly carried out by individuals and is not supported by an individual body, although it is often
supported by local authorities and estate agents.
Causes of gentrification:
The rent gap ­ the potential value of inner city land is greater than its actual value, meaning it
can be bought, developed and sold with profit
Change in economy structure from secondary to tertiary ­ inner cities began to decline due to
change, but there is now increasing demand as more services in cities begin to appear

Southend Street has 2400 people living in 140 9 bedroomed houses in 1923
