- From vegetables fibres found in wood
- Fibres are crushed to make a pulp
When considering paper, there are 5 factors to consider
1. Cost
2. Finish
3. Strength
4. Brightness
5. Thickness
You can change the properties of paper in 3 ways
1) Coatings
- Give a smooth finish
- e.g. china clay
2) Sizing Agent
- Improves paper's ink absorbency
- This also affects brightness
3) Laminating
- Different types of boards can be made from this
Paper thickness is measured in GSM grams per square metre
220+ gsm = board
Board thickness is measured in microns
There are 1000 microns in 1 mm
Virgin Paper
- 90% of all paper is virgin paper
- Virgin paper is made from 100% wood pulp w/no recycled paper
- It is stronger and whiter + usually used to make food containers because it reduces the
risk of contamination
Rotting of paper waste methane gas
Advantages Disadvantages
- Better for environment - Harmful chemicals are used to make it
- Energy saved less raw material whiter
