Positive effects of video games and computers
Social networking improves self esteem- Gonzales and Hancock
The study involved 16 boys and 47 girls. There were 3 conditions from looking at
their facebook page, looking at themselves in the mirror or doing nothing. Each
condition was done for 3 minutes. They found that there was a significant
difference between self esteem from the first condition and from the last
condition and this suggests that facebook boosts self esteem.
However, this could be due to a confounding variable of the number of facebook
friends or viewing selected information as most information is positive.
Some exergames improve physical fitness- Graham
The study used 13 overweight 10 year olds in 3 conditions of a 10 minute physical
activity on wii fit, 20 minutes of an unstructured activity or a 10 minute physical
activity on wii sports. This found that the wii fit activity was as good as the
unstructured activity but wii sports were worse than the unstructured activity.
This shows that some exergames have a positive effect on physical fitness but not
all games do.
However the study lacked population validity as the sample was small and limited
to one age range.
Also it was an unfair comparison as the amount of time spent on each activity
varied with the type of activity so results may be due to the differences in time
and not the type of video game so the results can be invalid.
Action games improve visual attention- Green and Bavelier
Involved non video game players aged 18-23 who played 1 of 2 video games for 1
hour a day for 10 days. They played either tetris or medal of Honor and it was
found that those who played Medal of Honor had better visual attention, spatial
ability and processing speed. Another study used both video game players and non
video game players and the video game players played action video games for at
least 4 days per week for 1 hour a day for 6 months and the findings were the
same as in the original experiment. This shows that video games can have positive
effects on visual attention.
The effect of pro social games on personal behaviour- Greitimeyer and Osswald
Involved 3 video games (lamers, lemmings and Tetris) being played for 8 minutes
and then the experimenter dropped a pot of pencils on the floor. She found that
67% of those who played the pro social lemmings game helped her pick them up
compared to 28% of those who played Lamers and 32% of Tetris players. The

experiment was repeated when her 'exboyfriend' came in after 8 minutes kicked
over a bin and tried to drag her out of the room. In this situation 56% of
participants helped her. This shows that video games that are pro social can
improve personal behaviour.
However, the study only tested the short term effects so we don't know the long
term effects of playing pro social video games.…read more
