Preview of OCR AS Chemistry F332: The Greenhouse Effect

First 124 words of the document:

The Greenhouse Effect
1. Solar energy reaches Earth mainly has visible and ultraviolet radiation
2. Earth absorbs some of this energy, heats up and radiates infrared radiation
3. Greenhouse gases (e.g. carbon dioxide and methane) in the troposphere absorb
some of this infrared radiation in the IR window
4. Absorption of infrared radiation by greenhouse gas molecules increases the
vibrational energy of their bonds
The energy is transferred to other molecules by collisions, increasing their kinetic
energy and raising the temperature
5. Greenhouse gas molecules also re-emit some of the absorbed infrared radiation in
all directions, some of which heats up the Earth
6. Increased concentrations of greenhouse gases lead to an enhanced greenhouse
effect
