Description of MSM
MSM claims that or memory consists of three different parts, the
sensory register, short term memory and long term memory and
that through maintenance rehearsal it gets transferred from the
sensory register to the STM to the LTM.
The sensory register is the part of the brain where information is
stored for only a fraction of a second. If you do not pay attention to
the information it is forgotten instantly.
The short term memory is the part of the brain there the information
is stored for 30 seconds this information comes from the sensory
register because you have paid attention to it.
The long term memory is the part of the brain where MSM states the
capacity and the duration is infinite. Information in the LTM comes
from the STM because it has been rehearsed.
Maintenance rehearsal is where you pay attention to something and
repeat it enough for it to be transferred from the sensory register to
the STM and then enough for it to remain in the LTM.
Strength of MSM.
MSM states that there is a long term memory and a short term
memory and that they are separate because of its supporting study
of primacy/recency. In this study the primacy words are rehearsed
and transferred in to the LTM and the recency words remain in the
STM
Weakness of MSM
Brain damaged patients such as Clive Wearing make us aware of a
weakness in MSM because he still has pieces of his LTM such as his
wife or how to play the piano but he doesn't have memories such as
his children. This shows that MSM isn't complex enough and that
there are different types of LTM.
